Time to dig over the vegetable plot in preparation for planting potatoes and onion sets. Dig in plenty of well-rotted manure, bagged manure from the garden centre is fine if the plot is small, otherwise a local supplier of manure can usually be found in local newspapers.
Buy your seed potatoes now for chitting, the potatoes (or tatties here in Scotland) grow shoots, which need to be well established prior to planting. This is not necessary for onions, which are planted just below surface of well-dug ground.
I usually use Arran Pilot as it is a reliable variety were I live but there are lots to try. Blight resistant varieties are probably best in poorly drained soils. Here's hoping the weather gets better for the digging.
